A Partial Denture and Sports Injuries

Posted .

Athletes are at amplified risk of injury. That’s the nature of the job. And dental injuries are more common than you think. More than 5 million teeth are knocked out every year in sports related activities.

The first thing to do to protect yourself is to wear proper safety equipment, such as a mouth guard. This can significantly decrease your chances of injury – 60 times over, in fact.

If you’ve been one of the unfortunate people to knock out multiple teeth or an injury has resulted in multiple extractions, however, please do not think that your teeth are lost forever. There are several options available to you. – dental implants, a bridge or a partial denture.

Let’s talk about the partial option. This is great if you are looking for an easy and pain-free way to replace your teeth. This type of removable dental appliance is like a miniature version of dentures that replicates the missing teeth in that location of your mouth. It consists of artificial teeth and gums which are designed to hold firmly and comfortably.

If you choose to get a partial, we will start by examining your mouth and taking a few x-rays to make sure the surrounding teeth are healthy. Then Dr. Navdeep Aulakh will prepare a detailed impression of the area. This includes the surrounding gums, neighboring teeth, and the corresponding teeth in your oral cavity. The impression will then be sent to a dental lab where your new partial will be custom made to meet the exact needs of your mouth.

Once you get your partial, be aware that you might want to also use a little a little denture adhesive for the extra hold it provides. It also helps block out food material from infiltrating the base of the partial.

If you live in the San Jose, California area and you have suffered one or more knocked out teeth, do not delay in calling 408-295-1100 to seek treatment at AZ Dental.
